This is a guest post I asked Brenda to write as my dating experience is over a decade old at this point. Both she and I wrestled with how to talk about this topic but I knew I wanted to. Dating itself in Morocco, between Moroccans themselves and between Moroccans and foreigners can feel and be a reality for a good chunk of people taboo. There are so many factors and circumstances that make up the dating world in and out of Morocco.

To begin, I want to say the thing some people will hate to admit: Whether religiously they or others believe it is right or wrong, it exists in Morocco just like anywhere else in the world. In rural places, dating is secretive. In my own experience, I only became aware of teenagers crushing on each other from my pseudo-village confidante position being the only American in the village. But, for traditional and oddly some non-traditional folk, you become a woman when you consummate your marriage.

For many couples this is the ultimate no-no. A variety of reasons for this come to mind:

My experience with the Moroccan Man

I know because my fiance is Moroccan, I’m American, we met while I lived in France, and he’s getting his green card on his own. His opinion is that you can’t help who you love, and furthermore that a lot of Moroccan women are just out to take advantage of a man. Please note that what I’ve stated above are the opinions of one Moroccan man my fiance. He didn’t say all Moroccan women are that way–just a lot of the ones he’s had personal experience dealing with.

I agree that when it comes to Islam, religion plays greatly into a relationship.

It was time to leave the grey skies of Finland behind and get ourselves a good dose of vitamin D. A ton of research went into this trip. Naturally, we decided to stay in a riad in the heart of the Medina and we also knew we wanted to explore a bit outside the city. From there we planned a wonderful 5 days in the city which we would love to tell you all about in this post.

The concrete runway was burning under the sweltering heat of the sun. And so were we as soon as we left the air-conditioned confines of Marrakech airport. Fortunately, our riad had arranged a pick up for which we were grateful. After we had settled in our room and enjoyed complimentary Moroccan mint tea, we decided to make good use of our first evening and grab a quick dinner at the famous Jemaa el-Fnaa square.

This place is the veritable heart of Marrakech and it really comes into full swing in the evening and morphs into a spectrum of Moroccan life.

Our first stop was Marrakech, where we spent a full week. When thinking about Morocco, Marrakech is one of the first places that comes to mind and we are so glad we made it there. Our kids got gifts from store keepers, people randomly engaged in play with them, and they always received lots of attention wherever we went. Marrakech might not be a place where high chairs are readily available, but it is definitely a child-friendly place where we felt very welcomed as a family.

Exploring the medina Walking through the city, especially through the souks in the medina, is a very sensory experience. The market stalls are very colorful, the calls for prayer come from several mosques at once, the smell of leather, smoke, incense and spices is everywhere, and the constant contact with people and carts and donkeys and motorcycles passing by really make you aware of your surroundings and of the fact that you are in a totally different place.

Our apartment was located on a third floor in the medina on a quiet street, so even though we were in the hustle and bustle of the medina, we had a peaceful retreat to escape to for nap time and at the end of the day. The weather was a bit cool during our time in the city, making it quite pleasant to walk around even in the middle of the day sometimes carrying kids on us! The cooler temperatures also made it more comfortable to wear more modest clothes for Paola.
